The Commodity That Cause Damages to the Environment: But Everyone Needs!

Palm oil plantations in Indonesia - The Jakarta Post

The title above is very suitable for palm oil and all of its derivatives. Palm oil is the basic ingredient that supports daily human needs, such as soap, shampoo, detergent, toothpaste to cooking oil, all of those consumer goods are made from palm oil.

As a commodity that has a price index, of course, palm oil is a profitable commodity. In addition, it shows that palm oil is very much needed. But on the other hand palm oil is considered to damage the environment and habitats around palm oil plantations.

The big question for all the stakeholders is, what should we do with these situations?

Indonesia and Malaysia are the biggest palm oil producers in the world. Global NGO like Greenpeace have been exposing deforestation for palm oil plantations. Of course this is a kind of work that should be done by working together. Companies in Indonesia and Malaysia should be applying the transparency system on producing palm oil.

Stop the deforestation, especially with firing, then stop illegal logging and replanting the plantation area to make carbon neutrality and ‘natural oxygen’ for humans.
